Just the two of us....... in Alaska

In the Spring before we came back to Texas we took a cruise to Alaska. Just the two of us. It was so much fun. We were reminded that we actually do like each other. We hiked, took a float plane, went whale watching, and saw tons of eagles. It was so beautiful there and we want to go back not on a cruise, but go town to town and stay in bed and breakfasts. I wish we had gone to Denali, but we will for sure go back. The one downer was we didn't see a bear. I really was hoping to have an encounter (a safe encounter, meaning us in a car,bus or even plane). But it was a little early in the season. They were just waking up. We missed Gavin like crazy, but I knew he was okay and we had cell service, so I could check in. Here's some pics from our adventure.

Yay Daddy! That was all that was heard throughout the Dallas opera house during Jared's med school graduation. Every time one of the graduates would stand up, Gavin would stand on my lap and yell "YAY DADDY!" He was so happy to be there and actually did a good job at staying in our row of seats (thanks to my in-laws and lots of lollipops). It was a great day and I am so proud of Jared. Dental school, med school, now just three more years of residency, and we can go home. It's in the bag. Easier for me to say. I'm really so proud of Jared and all the work he does. He's such a great example of dedication and endurance. Way to go, baby! We love you.

Home Sweet Home

Being home for 8 weeks was the best! We had so much fun being with family. I kinda got used to it and that made leaving a lot harder. I loved having my mom there to shop with and hang out. We took Gavin to the zoo a ton and also to the aquarium. I wish we could see her more. There's nothing like hanging out with your mom and baby. It's just the best and my mom is the best.

We stayed with Dee and Mary and let's just say not everyone can say they lived with their in-laws for 8 weeks and loved it! They were the best roommates. It was so fun for Gavin to wake up and see his Dee and Mimi. Every morning he would wake up and start looking for Dee and calling his name. That continued even after we were home for about two weeks. Dee and Mary came back to Texas with us for Jared's med school graduation and after they had gone home Gavin would still wake up and call for his Dee. It just about made me cry. He loved reading with his Mimi and going to the park to feed the ducks. I really have the best in-laws ever and they are the most wonderful grandparents.

Mexico Fun and Fam

We started our 8 week Utah trip on just the right foot. After a very, very long 22 hour drive from Dallas to SLC we took off for Cancun with the whole Rasmussen gang. Our resort was awesome and the food was pretty good. Gavin had the best time playing with his cousins and going to the beach. They had a water slide that was the perfect size for him and he would go up and down all by himself. He's becoming such a big boy and still the sweetest cutest boy, EVER! It was so fun being together with the family and having Jared with us 24/7. We really were missing him and hating his busy schedule. This was the perfect way to start our time off.

We can't wait to go back!

We love to go biking and hit up all the parks in the neighborhood. Gavin loves to ride and when he sees the park he starts to squeal with delight. It's so cute. He's so much fun. One of the great things about Dallas is that we can go to the park all year long.

Gavin turns One!

We had the best time at Gavin's first birthday party! Grandma Judy came in town and helped plan the big event. We had the party at the gazebo in front of our lake by our house and it turned out really fun! My friend Connie who is an awesome pastry chef made the best cake (pictures to follow, our camera ran out of batteries, grandma Judy took most of the pictures and will send us a disc, so I can add the rest of the party pictures later) We did a giraffe and jungle theme and went nuts with decorating, games, food, and a really fun time. I invited everyone and I mean everyone and we had about 45 people at his party. His primary nurse from the NICU came and it really touched my heart that she would take time to come and wish him a happy birthday. Thanks to her and all the physicians, respiratory therapists and staff at Parkland we were able to celebrate this special day.

We felt so blessed to have this day and have already started planning next years party. I'm thinking bouncy house. Here's a couple of pics from his day.

Halloween:Episode II

We had a great Halloween night. We had a neighborhood appetizer party and then went around our lake where they had a huge bouncey house, food and music. Gavin was so happy to be out and about and getting lots of attention. We were out walking around for so long that we missed all the trick or treaters. I have two huge bags of candy left. Already today, I have had about ten boxes of nerds. Here's some pics from our night out. Enjoy.

Halloween: Episode I

Here we are at our ward party the night before Halloween. I couldn't get my buns right on my Leah wig ( we were running late, shocker), so I had to go as Luke and Jared went as Anakin. It was fun because we were able to use our light sabers. Yes, we have two. The real ones. Don't ask.

Cousin Love

We had such a great time visiting Missouri and spending time with Josh, Melissa, Lucie, and sweet baby Jane. It was such a beautiful time to be there. We also got some great pictures done by Angelique (a local photographer). The babies had a really fun time together. They especially liked to swap pacifiers. I would look at Jane and she'd have a blue paci in her mouth and Gavin would have Jane's green paci in his mouth. Oh well, just building their immunity, right?

Gavin is very dexterous. He loves to touch things with just his index finger. It's really funny. Also, if you put your finger out in front of him he'll grab it and then put his finger to yours. It's so cute. I often look down and he's stroking his giraffe lovey with just his index finger. I love it.

Getting Big

I can't believe that Gavin is almost ten months old! He's getting so big! He loves to pull himself up and walk from ottoman to ottoman. It's so cute. He's so quick and we've been staying in shape by chasing him around and just trying to keep him from hurting himself. His new thing this week is to pull ALL the toilet paper off the roll in the bathrooms. He thinks it's so funny. He also has started to bite and it is not soft. He has six teeth and when he bites down you feel all of them. Last night I was sitting in our living room with my legs up on the ottoman and he walked over and bit down on my leg, I yelped ouch and when he looked up he started to laugh. It was hard not to laugh with him, but I think it's time to start teaching him not to bite. Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Enjoy the new pics and I will try to be better at updating our blog. Dee and Mary are coming this week and we'll have more pictures after their visit. We can't wait for them to come.

We had a great Fourth of July! We were so lucky to have Kylie with us for 11 days It was the BEST! Kylie helped me with Gavin and we had such a great time. We were always busy doing fun things and we loved having her help. I can't wait for another visit!

Here are some pictures that Peg took of Gavin. They turned out so cute! He is such a sweet boy. At 7 months he's starting to crawl, laugh, show off his new top and bottom teeth, sing, and when you ask him to give you a kiss he puts his lips on yours, it's the best! I love every minute with him. We have been so lucky. He still sleeps through the night and is always happy. Right now he's really into Jared. Every time Jared comes home he just lights up and starts laughing. They are so sweet together and Jared is the best dad.

We recently found out that Gavin is allergic to our cats and so with a sad goodbye they went to live with our friends Kelly and Travis. D'arcy is having a hard time adjusting (shocker), but James is doing well. They were great cats and companions and we will miss them, but feel good that they went to a good home and we can visit anytime.

Trip to Utah

Last month we were able to go home to Utah, TWICE! The first was for my sweet oma's funeral and the second time was for Jared's spring break. Here's some pictures from the first trip home.......

Because I came into town on such short notice I didn't have time to tell everyone, so I called Dana and told her to meet me at McDonald's where I was having lunch with my family and to not tell her kids, so I could surprise them with Gavin. She sent me a text when they pulled up and I walked out with Gavin in my arms and when they walked in I said, "Hey what are you guys doing here?" It was so funny to see their faces and such a fun surprise! This is the picture from McDonald's.

This was Gavin's first sleep over with a cousin. Alissa stayed with me and helped out with Gavin. I'm so glad she likes him now. I think it's safe to say that she LOVES him!

Gavin got a lot of attention while we were home. It was so fun for him to be around so many people that love him. It really makes me home sick and wish we lived closer, but we'll just have to come up with more excuses to visit.

This was Gavin's outfit for his blessing. He looked so cute! Thanks Dana and Steve! We were so lucky to be able to go home and bless him around our friends and family. Jared did an amazing job and it was so special to watch him give our baby such a great blessing. They had a great moment together and I know that they will both treasure it for many many years.

I thought this pose was hilarious! Jared thinks it's far too unnatural, but it's kind of like those baby posters where they're playing poker, or driving cars and in this case posing for play girl. It's kind of funny. Don't worry, I'm not like Angela from "The Office" I will not be purchasing posters of babies playing the saxophone or anything like that. I just thought this was funny of Gavin.

I know that everyone thinks that their baby is the cutest, but I'm confident that you will all agree that it just doesn't get cuter than this! Gavin is getting so big and if you can believe it, cuter by the minute. He is the biggest joy in our lives and everyday I feel so lucky to be his mom. We woke up this morning and realized that Gavin had become a big boy. He has transitioned from newborn to baby. He is such a sweet baby. He wakes up smiling and just goes with the flow. We love every minute with him and couldn't imagine our life any other way. We love our little stinker! Here are a few new pictures from this week.

We had a great Christmas. We were really sad not to be in Utah with our family, but we made the best of it. I made a Christmas Eve dinner and we watched movies and hung out in our Christmas pajamas. We got some great gifts and had a couple surprises, which if you know us we never have surprises, so all in all it was a great Christmas.

Biggest Loser

As a family we decided to do the biggest loser. Each couple put in $20 and at the end of 90 days who ever has lost the most weight will get the pot of money. Jared and I have started to workout together and I went back to teaching my spin classes this week. Let's just say that it will be hard, but I'm going to go out and say that I think I'm going to win. I've recruited my neighbor Carla, who is a nutritionist to look at my food journal daily and she's going to take me grocery shopping soon. I'm excited to start this program. It's amazing how much better I feel just after making this goal and beginning a regimen. I want to do it the right way and keep it off, not just lose to lose for the competition. I know I'll be happier if I can learn the skills to eat right for the rest of my life. I've flip flopped from diet to diet and been up and down with my weight, but I think I can do this the right way and hopefully keep a good consistent weight. I've always loved working out, competing in local cycling events, triathlons, and have even run marathons, but my diet has always been terrible. I'm a snacker and late night eater and that is all going to change. Here I am with a new year ahead of me and feel fortunate that I have a body that I can change.

Christmas in Texas

So, Gavin can't travel during the holidays because it's too dangerous with rsv and all the other virus' going around and that leaves us in Texas for the holidays. I put up a tree and some other decorations around the house to try and bring the Christmas spirit into our home. My sister, Melissa sent Gavin a cute Santa outfit and I put the hat on him and tried to take some cute pictures. He's getting cuter and cuter if that's even possible.

Christmas Came Early!

After much anticipation and 17 days in the NICU at Parkland Hospital, Gavin Dee Rasmussen has made it home. He had a rough entry into the world, but with the amazing care from all the doctors and dedicated nurses we're hopeful he's on his way to a full recovery. I know some of you haven't been able to get the whole story, so I thought it would be easier if I blogged about it for you and catch you all up on his progress. Gavin was born on Friday November 14, 2008 at 11:52 am. He weighed 6 Ilbs. and 9 0z. My labor was uneventful and he came out with just a few pushes. I was induced due to low amniotic fluid, but we had no reason to think anything was wrong with me or Gavin. Shortly after he came into the world, Jared and I noticed he was breathing fast and hadn't even cried. Our OB called in the Peds guys and they took a look at him. Within 4 hours Gavin was on O2 and having difficulty breathing. He was taken to the NICU and observed there over night. The next day he got worse. He was then put on CPAP (a breathing device that helps push air in the lungs through the nose). Then it just kept getting worse. The next day he was intibated and the day after that his right lung collapsed and he had a chest tube put in his little body. We had neonatologists, nurse practitioners, and infectious disease trying desperately to figure out what was wrong with him. Jared and I felt useless and we were afraid to even leave his bedside. He had culture after culture, lp's, blood draws, and any other test you could imagine and they were all coming up negative. They had put him on antibiotics, but he was not responding and everyday we thought we would lose him. It was the worst and scariest time in our lives. After day 6 of intibation a wonderful doctor named Pablo came and decided to try a different round of antibiotics and within two days Gavin started to get better. It's a slow recovery and although they aren't for certain what he has they are calling it a very acute case of bacterial pneumonia.

All through this traumatic event Jared and I felt comforted and loved by our friends, neighbors, ward members and supportive parents. We didn't get off our knees. Our ward was so supportive and our bishop called a ward fast for Gavin. We have the most amazing friends out here. My girlfriends arranged for lunches for my mom and I everyday while we were at the hospital and dinners every night. My mom was here for us and I don't think I could have made it through those 2 weeks without her. Jared had to go back to his rotation and they discharged me on day 3, so I was stuck having to go home without my sweet baby. My mom and I would go home late at night and sleep for three hours and then head right back in and sit with Gavin all day. Jared would rush from his rotation at another hospital to Parkland and sit and talk to his baby. Gavin would always open his eyes the minute Jared came into the room. I sang to him and read him stories and my mom knitted by his bedside. If you know us then you wouldn't be surprised to hear by the end of the first week I had made great friends with all the nurses and they let me help take care of him as much as possible (i.e taking his temp. changing his diapers (who would know that I actually was thrilled to change his diapers), and anything else they let me do). All the nurses would come and comment on how cute Gavin is and we had a couple nurses fighting over him. Everyone wanted to take care of him. He has a sweetness about him that is undeniable and he looks just like Jared. He got the nickname "little gentleman" because he is such a good baby, very even tempered like his daddy (not like his mommy). During the second week Gavin started to improve. He needed less and less O2 and was eventually on room air. It was such a relief to have him turn the corner and start to improve. Gavin has had a hard time learning to eat (that's what you get when you're not allowed to eat for the first two weeks of life, also babies that have been intibated have a tendency to struggle with sucking, so we're working on it). We have wonderful lactation nurses that help and a great speech pathologist, who helps Gavin with his sucking. They call me at home to check on him and his progress. Now that Gavin is home we have been trying to get on a schedule. I love having him home! He still breathes hard and I have to go into the pediatricians office twice a week for weight checks, but hopefully he'll get it and this will all be a bad memory. This week we are meeting with a pulmonologist because our pediatrician wants his lungs looked at and possibly put him on some steroids to clear them up. We both feel that that would be good and want anything that will help him get better. We feel so lucky to finally have our beautiful baby home with us. We'll keep you posted on his progress and want to thank you all so much for the prayers, fasts, and support. We really could have not made it through this trying time without our faith and love for the savior. We know that heavenly father has big plans for our little guy and can't wait to watch him grow and accomplish his goals in life. We love you ALL!

This Halloween, being nine months pregnant, I decided to embrace the belly and use it for my costume. Jared painted a pumpkin on my tummy and we hung out with our neighbors and handed out candy. Jared wore the famous Michael Jackson mask and we had a fun night. A few kids were afraid to come to our house because of the scary mask, but what's Halloween without a scare?

I thought I was going to go into labor by the end of the day, but no it was just the fried chicken bacon. A couple days later and feeling much better, we feel we've been there and done that as far as the fair is concerned and will wait a couple years before we go again.

Okay, so we broke down and started a blog(with help from Megan!). We're excited to share pictures and thoughts with you all and hope we can maintain it.

Lately, we've been getting the house ready for baby Gavin(that's the name of the month), to enter the world, and our lives. We're getting so excited! We have 5 more weeks!!!! We can hardly wait! I'm still teaching all my spin and water aerobic classes and joke with the members that maybe one day soon my water will break while I'm on the spin bike. I think it's funny, Jared thinks it's scary, and the members probably think it's weird, but I'm still going strong and they keep asking me to put off my maternity leave and stay a bit longer, so we'll see how long I keep going. Jared is back on OMFS and busy with call, surgeries, and the clinic. He's been getting great exposure to everything (I mean it! He sees the weirdest stuff!). He's has a month back on service and then he'll start neuro. It's an exciting time for him and he keeps getting great evaluations. Last month he was on psych and at the end in his evaluation they commented that having Jared on their service was not like having a student, but a colleague. I'm very proud of him.

The state fair is here and we're going to try and check it out this weekend. How could we pass up deep fried twinkies, corn dogs, ferris wheels, and cattle contests? Hopefully, we'll remember to take a camera and post some pictures.
